BASIC INTERNET JARGONS (அவசியம் தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டியது)

Lan - is a local area network. A network is a group of computers connected together by some type of broadband cable, such as Token Ring or Ethernet.
Wan - is a wide area network. It is a group of computers connected through bridges, routers, hubs and repeaters.
Internet - is a global digital infrastructure that connects millions of computers.
World Wide Web - is a uniform method of accessing and retrieving information on the Internet.
Hypertext - is text with links to additional information about that text.
Hypermedia - is the ability to display pictures, video, and sound.
Intranet - is a private computer network based on the standards of the Internet.
Extranet - is an Intranet which extends beyond the physical boundaries of a corporation.
Protocol - is a method by which two computers agree to communicate.
Application Protocol - facilitates communication between an application and a server.
TCP/IP - is an abbreviation for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.
Address - is name by which a computer can be called or referenced. An address is also a location of a resource on a network.
For example:
Vasava1234@vasava.org
Domain - is logical grouping of computers on a network. It may include multiple networks. It may also just be a subset of a network of computers. So domains can have sub domains.
Domain Name - Just like all, domains need to have names.
Top Level Domain - The top level domains (TLD) of the Internet are:
·com ... commercial entities
·edu ... four-year educational institutions
·gov ... non-military, government instititutions
·mil ... military orgianizations
·net ... network operations and Internet Service Providers (ISP)
·org ... non-profit organizations
Host - is a computer that is enabled to function on a network.
Browser - is a graphical user interface (GUI) application program that retrieves and displays documents from Web sites.
Browser Types - Not all browsers are created equally. The all have slightly different features.
Leading Browser - Microsoft's Internet Explorer is by far the world's most popular browser.
Other browsers include NCSA Mosaic (the grandfather of most browsers), Firefox, Konqueror, Netscape Navigator, Opera, and Lynx, a non-graphical browser.
Helper - is a separate application program that is invoked by the browser.
Plug-In - is an application program that is invoked by the browser.
URL - Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the term used to identify an Internet resource, and can be specified in a single line of text.
URN - Uniform Resource Name (URN) is the term used to identify an Internet resource, without the use of a scheme and can be specified in a single line of text.
URI - Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) is used by a browser to identify a single document, and it too can be specified in a single line of text.
http - HyperText Transfer Protocol to access a world wide web server.
Gopher - is software which follows a simple protocol for tunneling through TCP/IP. It is a distributed document search and retrieval system based on a client/server model.
ftp - File Transfer Protocol to access an FTP Server. FTP is used to transfer files and it can be done anonymously.
Port - identifies an application or a service.
